Custom Kenner Hockey Jersey for OSWCC

Each year, the Ohio Star Wars Collectors Club holds a summer social where up to 200 members and guests gather together to celebrate Star Wars collecting.  In recent years, this event has been highlighted by a club auction where donated items are auctioned to benefit both the club and a charity.  Through the years, over $3000 has been raised for various charities.

For the 2011 OSWCC Summer Social in Cincinnati, Ohio, KennerCollector.com wanted to do something special for the club in addition to the Kenner-tastic tote bags given to OSWCC and a few other clubs for their annual events.  Hockey is popular in Ohio, and the idea of creating a hockey jersey using Kenner blue was too fun to resist.  Using this blue as the highlight, we utilized the University of Maine jersey and font scheme to create a one of a kind jersey for OSWCC.  Customized with the official summer social patch, OSWCC name and number 97 (the club was founded in 1997), the jersey raised over $200 for the club and their charity.

Kenner’s MASK Adventure Packs Uncut Proof Sheet

Kenner MASK Adventure Pack Proof Sheet PrototypeThis is an uncut proof sheet for Kenner’s MASK Adventure Packs.  Prototype proof sheets like these were often used to make final corrections before the cards were printed in mass quantities.  The sheet measures 28 1/2″ tall by 20 1/2″ wide.  The cards are printed on front and back.

The Adventure Packs were released in 1986 and were a way for Kenner to expand the MASK line.  They included a MASK figure along with several themed accessories.  The sheet has the backer cards for Venom’s Revenge, Jungle Challenge, Rescue Mission, and Coast Patrol.

Here are close ups of the front:

FAO Schwarz Celebrates 150 Years With Display Of Historic Toys

FAO Schwarz is celebrating their 150th anniversary with a tribute to some of the most popular toys of all time.

“Now celebrating its 150th Anniversary, FAO Schwarz is marking this rare milestone in the world of retail by unveiling a special gallery featuring prototype, original and early editions of some of the best-known toys in the world, alongside some nostalgic items from the FAO Schwarz archives. Displayed prominently throughout the famed flagship store in New York City, “A Gallery of Historic Toys,” will be on display now through April 10. ”

Some iconic Kenner toys that made the cut are the Easy-Bake Oven and the Play-Doh Fuzzy Pumper Barber & Beauty Shop.  I would love to see if they have any early Kenner prototypes or samples on display.  If anyone can stop in and take some pictures, we would love to post them!

Check out the full press release here.

The Six Million Dollar Man Headquarters Double-Sided Store Display

Kenner Play-Doh Double-Sided Cardboard Store DisplayIt’s hard to compete with this Six Million Dollar Man Display that popped up on ebay earlier this month, but here’s a store display that’s still pretty cool.  This point of purchase display is double-sided cardboard and measures 13 3/4″ wide x 16″ tall.  The sign is based on the standard toy logo and has the words Colonel Steve Austin next to a picture of OSI’s favorite secret agent.  It also has the Kenner logo, the LP Logo (Long Playing Toy), and the words The Six Million Dollar Man Headquarters on it.

Kenner Play-Doh Double-Sided Metal Store Display

Kenner Play-Doh Double-Sided Metal Store DisplayLet’s keep the store display love going with another double-sided metal sign.  Kenner store displays, or POP (Point of Purchase) displays as they are sometimes called,  are a really fun segment of toy collecting.  Kenner produced many different types of store displays over the years to help sell their product lines.  Some displays are relatively simple like printed cardboard shelf talkers, and others are so large and elaborate that you are in awe when you see them.  Individual displays and display sets could be purchased by toy store owners for use in their stores.  In some cases, the displays were thrown in as a perk to encourage large orders, or given to large retailers in hopes they would display them in the toy aisles.

Like the Fast 111’s sign, this large double-sided metal display is made from two identical metal halves that are riveted together.  This allowed it to hang from the ceiling and be seen from both sides.  The sign measures 20″ high x 20″ wide and features the Play-Doh logo, as well as the tag line America’s Favorite.  It has the Kenner logo in the lower right hand corner along with the following copyright information:  ©CPG Products Corp. 1981.

The sign also has the cool Play-Doh boy on it, not the lame Play-Doh punk kid Hasbro tried to push on us a while back.

One of the coolest parts of this sign is that many of the details are actually press formed into the metal to create a 3-dimensional effect.  You can see the raised areas in the image below:

Kenner Starting Lineup Store Display Find

Kenner Starting Lineup DisplayStarting Lineup collector Joe Curcio has sent us a great story about a recent find of his:

The mighty Kenner Store Displays.  Nobody did it better than Kenner.  Back in the 1970’s, Star Wars always had great, eye catching displays.  It was either with an item hanging from the store ceiling, a great standup cardboard cutout, or those ever popular cardboard rails to promote the Star Wars items.  Kenner did this for many of their toy releases, but one of my favorites was the display for the Kenner MLB Line.

Back in 1989, they used an awesome 2 tier, clear plastic display with 7 players on each row, and some of the player’s cards displayed in the background.  These came to the store ready to use with instructions about how to display them on the pegboard.  The display would be placed above the figures that were to be sold.  They also came with the proper rods to use on the pegboard.  I do remember seeing them in stores like this or sometimes just placed on a shelf.  Kenner also made these displays for the Baseball Greats series and the 1990 MLB series, but both are actually a very rare find.

A few months ago I was able to locate a few of these from and Ex-Kenner employee.  I was thrilled to get these still sealed in the original shipping boxes.  When I got them and opened them up I was so excited.  I was even more excited when I saw something about these that I have never seen before.  No, they weren’t all prototypes inside, although that would have been nice.  It was 14 players as always, but it had 12 figures from the 1989 baseball series, 2 players from the 1989 Baseball Greats series, and in the background in had baseball cards from the 1990 series.  Very interesting combination.  It’s a great mix!

Here are some unboxing pictures:
