Of all the Kenner toys that I have run across, this is by far my favorite and at the top of my most wanted list. The Daddy Saddle is a vinyl coated, foam rubber saddle that was sold as a way to rectify the apparently faulty, time honored tradition of playing “horsie”.
Most kids would be perfectly content riding around on their parents bareback style, but this was a need Kenner thought they couldn’t pass up. As rare as these toys seem to be, I’m thinking Kenner missed the mark on the demand. That or the toy caught on with the S&M crowd and things went horribly wrong from there.
The picture below is from Kenner’s 1965 Toy Fair catalog.
I love the look on the girl’s face in the lower left hand corner. Sure the ad says for “when Daddy’s out on the range,” but who did they think they were kidding? This is the face of a little girl with no daddy to ride and she is clearly going to have daddy issues when she grows up!
